There is a lot of discussion about Twitter, and social media in general, and the time it takes to maintain a presence. There’s no denying that it can be time-consuming to use Twitter and other social networks effectively. But what if you could find additional uses for Twitter that not only helped you use the service but also made you more productive? Here are a few ways you can do just that. Track Tasks with Remember The Milk If you have...

For those of you that haven’t heard, Twitter has released an official bookmarklet to allow you to tweet about just about anything you find online. While I appreciate the fact that Twitter is moving forward with tools to make it easier for its users to share information through its service (the official Twitter iPhone app, the official Twitter “Tweet” button for websites and blogs, etc.), I wish they’d put a little more...

I honestly have no idea when this was announced, but Twitter will start disabling its “Basic Auth” on Aug. 16, 2010 (the system will be completely unavailable by Aug. 31). For Twitter users, this doesn’t really mean anything. However, for Web developers that use various interfaces and plug-ins to share information on Twitter, this is big. The majority of API libraries and classes that were (and, as of this writing, still are)...

An article from earlier this week on NYTimes.com talked about the growth of Tumblr — 25,000 new accounts daily and 1.5 billion page views each month — and how it may be adding a new must-do activity for businesses who use social networks to market their products and services. Tumblr is a blogging platform with a social media focus that allows users to post text, images, videos, links, quotes and audio to their tumblelog, a short-form...

Beginning August 16th, Twitter will no longer support the basic authentication protocol for its platform. That means the only way to authenticate users will be through a Twitter application. In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to use Twitter as your one-click authentication system, just as we did with Facebook . Step 1: Setting Up The Application We’ll first need to set up a new Twitter…  Read More →

There are a lot of Twitter apps out there for managing your account, tracking and sorting followers, using lists, and enhancing your ability to market your business. New apps pop up daily, and the lists just keep on growing. I’ve done a few posts on these various Twitter tools, typically focused on extending the way you use Twitter and helping you get more out of it as a participant. For example: 6 Twitter Clients You May Not Have Heard Of…  Read More →

If you’re a Twitter user you’ve more than likely heard about or seen Swedish singer Robyn’s new music video. If not, then here’s what the fuss is about. The new online video is a 3D interactive affair which is integrated with Twitter. The song is called “Don’t F***ing Tell Me What To Do” and Robyn sings about all the things that are killing her, pretty much everything in her life by the sounds of things. The video features the...

Cliqset completed a significant upgrade to its social sharing website Wednesday. The site now fully integrates Twitter, and it has refined its aggregation system so you get a much more streamlined, easy-to-digest view of your friends’ activities across multiple social sites. There are literally dozens of changes, both visible and behind-the-scenes, in the new Cliqset . We’ve been testing out the new version (the company is half-jokingly...

Twitter is launching some new tools that let you easily add your Facebook friends and your LinkedIn connections to the list of people you follow on the social network. If your friends from Facebook and LinkedIn are on Twitter, you can use the Twitter’s official apps on those social networks to start following them with one click. This should be a boon to people who are interested in…  Read More →

Here’s Twitter’s unofficial mascot drawn solely using cascading stylesheets, by Subcide’s Steve Dennis. What you see above is just an image — read Steve’s post or jump straight to the demo to see the real thing. It looks great in all modern browsers (basically, everything newer than IE8) and if you look at it in Safari or Chrome, you’ll notice it’s even animated using WebKit-specific CSS animation controls....

May 31, 2010 is quit Facebook day. Facebook has been slammed in the technical and mainstream media for overly-complicated privacy controls. Some of the more cynical critics claim they were purposely designed to share a person’s details without them realizing. Facebook’s privacy policy has 50 different settings, 170 different options and contains almost 6,000 words — it’s longer than the US Constitution! Facebook argue...

One of the key ingredients of the Twitter ecosystem is the ability to pass along a link of interest from somebody you follow by retweeting it to your own followers. You get to discover new content and new people of interest at the same time. Now, you can do the same thing in Google Buzz. The Buzz team announced the new “Reshare” feature Thursday morning. Over the course of the next day or so, it should be showing up as a fourth option...

There is a lot to keep track of if you use social media sites for marketing your business and networking with colleagues. Because most of these sites are free, social media users are especially susceptible to unexpected changes that can have a significant impact on the way you use the sites, sometimes without much (or any) advance notice. Over recent weeks, for example, we’ve seen the “Become a Fan” button/wording on Facebook...

Is your Twitter client using basic user name and password authentication? If that’s the case, it will stop working on June 30, 2010 — the countdown has begun (nice retro JavaScript animation, incidentally!) Basic authentication will be switched off in the Twitter API and OAuth will be the only option from that date. Fortunately, there are several benefits to using OAuth: you don’t need to worry about storing or accidentally revealing...
